What's Your Love Language?

What's Your Love Language?

Rebecca Lee

Loving in meaningful ways that fill your own cup can be a powerful act of self care. We asked our lovely makers what makes them, and those they adore, feel good

For me, it would be small acts of joy or pleasure that have been prepared for you – a bath run for you, a candle lit for you in a room you’re going to be in, a hot water bottle pre-placed in your bed, coffee rituals each morning. Micro moments that suggest great care and thought.

I always love a reciprocal love language, one that brings me as much joy as the person I am celebrating. The acts that make me feel good are when I am able to cook or bake for my loved ones. I have been on quite the sourdough kick and I just mastered a sourdough bagel!

It really brings me joy to be able to spend time making them as I find it so therapeutic and filling to my soul. In turn, I love the joy it brings my loved ones!

Tom and I express our love in different ways. For him, it’s through taste and touch - he’s an incredible cook and shows his affection by preparing delicious meals for me almost every day (especially his delicious curry!)

My love, on the other hand, is expressed through gestures like planning day trips, dinners, and picnics, and always seeking out special gifts for the people I care about.

I think my way of receiving love and giving love has two different languages. My love language for giving is caring, cooking, listening, surprising Jip with a warm and delicious meal by the fire after he has been working in the cold all day.

When Jip and I just met, he was crazy about cats, but he wasn't allowed to have one in his apartment in Amsterdam (his parents own the place and they thought it wasn’t nice for a cat to live on the 3rd floor, I mean, fair enough), sooo I was 21 at the time and thought; if there's one person here that can give him a kitten and get away with it by just smiling, it's me!

So I asked his mom to meet me for coffee, but instead we went to an old ladies house who had kittens, and I asked his mom if I could give Jip a kitten for his birthday. She said to me, while petting the cutest kitten in the world 'You know I can't say no now, right?' And of course I did, that was the whole plan. So I gifted Jip a kitten for his birthday and Siep (the cat), is still his best friend and now lives with us in our house at the sea with a garden!

My love language for receiving is quality time, having good and deep conversations, and physical touch.

I do love all love languages, it's hard to choose!!

For me, thoughtful gifts, especially those related to flowers and creativity, express love beautifully.

It’s the intention behind the gesture, whether a handwritten note, a thrifted treasure, a home-cooked meal, or even just a quick hug, that truly matters. Perhaps the most meaningful gift you can give someone is your presence and accessibility.

According to me the best love languages often lie in the most simple intentions. Of course it can be something you offer or something you receive (obviously flowers are always a good idea) however I would tend to say the language that has the most power and the best long-term impact is your presence, when it’s full of understanding, comfort and hugs.

One of my love languages is acts of service, particularly when it comes to personal wellbeing for myself and those I love - whether it’s cooking a nutritious meal, handling chores, or running a warm bath to help relax. It’s about creating space for rest and self-care, which is so important for both body and mind.

Creation is an important part of my daily life, and I love sharing it with my loved ones—whether it's creating a nice atmosphere for a shared dinner, making a fire to gather around, co-creating a project, or simply enjoying the pure joy of crafting something fun and colourful with my nephews!

And for me, it’s definitely nourishment and comfort. Food is my love language in every sense - flicking through cookbooks for inspiration, buying ingredients, cooking something delicious, setting the table, lighting some candles, wearing something comfy and taking the time out to slow down, sit, talk and savour. It’s the whole experience of sharing this precious time around the table with loved ones that really fills my soul!
